Being a DC native in Wisconsin, I recently discovered I can watch Wizards games online using my parents' DC-area Comcast login. Which I'm very happy about, except for one stupid silly little thing that scratches my OCD in just the right way to piss me off.
My parents offered a while back to give me their Comcast login if I'd set up Netflix for them on their assorted devices. I didn't take them up on it at the time, because I couldn't think of anything their Comcast login would get me that my Charter login doesn't already cover. But a couple weeks ago I learned I could stream Wizards games...with a Comcast login.
My dad's password has my sister's name in it. I wonder who the favorite is?
Comcast insists on putting the full-screen feed inside some stupid letterbox with an Xfinity (a.k.a. here's a brand name that's not "Comcast" so maybe you'll hate this a little less) logo in the top right.
I hate pointless letterboxes.
I was able to eventually mess with the custom picture size & position setting on my tv to get rid of the letterbox, but it's a silly process to have to go through every time I want to watch a game.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! once gave a motivational speech at my middle school. I wonder what he'd have to say about shitty letterboxes.

I'm not sure what exactly is being done in this case, but normally letter-boxing is done because it's lower bandwidth - a lower-quality image. I much prefer it to the alternative, which is that they give you the same quality picture blown up to fullscreen, because, as you found, you can zoom in yourself if you want to - but you can't zoom out of a non-letterboxed picture to get the quality back if you prefer that.

This isn't due to lower bandwidth—the little bandwidth indicator shows full strength. I've got 60 Mbps internet and 802.11ac wifi.

"My dad's password has my sister's name in it. I wonder who the favorite is?" I feel your pain.

It's not because you can't download more, but because they don't want to upload more.
